I write this article because some questions come to ask me where Maldives Island is that I wrote in my previous article and how do we get there from Jakarta? So, here is my answer. Republic of Maldives is located in the Indian Ocean, at the Srilanka next to India. In 2004, some islands in the Maldives also were wiped by tsunami. About the flight if there no schedule change, from Singapore to the Maldives is every day 08:30 ETD and 22:30 ETA (Maldives time 2 hours later than the Jakarta, with a flying time app. of 4.5 hours).
The Srilanka Airport called Male Airport. It is very small, with only 2 kinds of airport, the ordinary runway airport and the sea airport for seaplane that is located on the island Hulule, about 2 km from the capital Male. Usually when you leave the airport you could find taxi, but here you must ride dhonny. Dhonny is a motor boat to cross over to the Male.
Male city road is very narrow and many motorcycles went by, because the island is small, only with a population of almost 150,000 people. Total population in the Maldives alone is around 300,000 people. You will only need a very short time to explore the Maldives coast.
Maldives consists of a cluster of islands atoll range around 800 km from North to South. Some consist of the resort, which is managed by international hotel network, so you don’t need to worry about the services. Some suggestions about attractions and activities you can do :
1. For those who like diving, snorkeling, or fishing, this might be a place of interest. Yacht diving package for a week budget is around USD 1800-3000 depending on the type of service and yacht. One of the suggestions is try the Atol Explorer Cruise that we have previously wrote. By the way, just a reminder that whiles you cruising, your cell phone might not be able to be reached, because no signal in some sea area, but you will be fascinated by the dolphins that will play around your boat.
2. Locale food here is a lot like Indian foods, such as curry. They usually eat rotti (same as thin prata) and tuna fish. Tuna fish and big fish is a main course food that uniquely, they just take the meat. Meanwhile, the bones and their contents removed. Likewise chicken, without bones. Small fish only used as bait.
3. Spare your time to visit Villifushi Island with seaplane ride. You will have the unique experience of the crew including the pilot and the co-pilot, because they also like the other tourists who only wear shorts and barefoot. With capacities about 15 people, you will see a beautiful group of atolls from sky. After that, you will be brought to the Villifushi by speedboat, because the aircraft can only landing in a resort that far from Villifushi. Villifushi Island is an island which has wiped by the tsunami in 2004 and is now rebuilt as a new settlement for the people of Maldives.
4. Or you can visit Dhaaru with approximately 1500 people, the facilities can be say quite modern, clean and slick. Western life style also can find in this place. Some residents who live here are middle class. So, no wonder if you will find various foods that you may have never felt such as a snippet of tuna boiled without skin and bones and is only eaten with chile and fresh lime.
